Q. The way the Consumer Court works is quite simple.
In all events, documentation and proof is most important. So always remember to ask for a receipt – whether you are happy or unhappy with the service. Make that a habit.

Once you have tried to remedy the situation with the vendor, and there is no recourse for settling the problem that you are facing, then you decide to approach the Consumer Court.
Q. What is the “Consumer Court”?
Remember, the ‘Consumer Court’ is a colloquial name. The formal names for the Consumer Court are
District Consumer Redressal Forum
State Consumer Grievance Redressal Commission
National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission
Q. What is the difference in all of them?
The District Forum deals with all disputes upto Rs. 20 Lakhs (Rs. 20,00,000).
The State Commission deals with all disputes from Rs. 20 Lakhs (Rs. 20,00,000) to Rs. 1 Crore (1,00,00,000) and any appeals from the District Forum.
The National Commission deals with all disputes above Rs. 1 Crore (1,00,00,000) and any appeals from the State Commission.
Q. Okay so now that I know this, what purpose does it serve?
For filing your complaint, you need to assign a value for your complaint. So think before you choose where to file your petition. It should be a mix of convenience, of sense, and value of your complaint. Convenience – because it should be easily accessible to you to go and argue your case. Sense – because you wouldn’t want to take a complaint to the National Commission without going through the District first, if it warrants that. And Value – because from the value, you can choose where you file your petition.
Q. But how does one make a Petition?
